We were honoured to design the expansion of Kaikōura’s iconic Pier Hotel, a cherished destination for both travellers and locals. The project involved seamlessly integrating a new bar and additional accommodation into the historic structure while preserving the unique character that makes The Pier Hotel so special.
From the very start, our designs were precisely tailored to the project brief, avoiding unnecessary additions and staying sharply focused on the client’s goals. Respecting the building’s heritage was central to our approach. We ensured the preservation of its iconic facade and carefully retained vintage elements, blending the charm of the past with the functionality required for modern use.
To streamline construction and reduce disruptions, we provided detailed and accurate documentation, minimising the need for construction RFIs and ensuring a smoother execution. Council compliance was expertly managed, making regulatory processes seamless and stress-free for everyone involved.
We also leveraged BIM modelling to enhance efficiency and sustainability, minimising onsite wastage and promoting a greener approach to construction. Taking an active role in project management, we went above and beyond by procuring all major materials — steel, frames, trusses, joinery, and more — before construction began. This proactive step, which is uncommon in the construction industry, helped significantly reduce business interruptions and contributed to the project’s overall success.
We’re incredibly proud to have played a part in expanding The Pier Hotel, enhancing its offerings while honouring its legacy. This project stands as a testament to thoughtful design, careful planning, and a shared commitment to preserving Kaikōura’s heritage.
