Queen Cottages development
Complete Projects provided architectural design and development support services for the Queen Cottage, the first home within a new cottage-style residential development located on Taranaki Drive in Woodend, Canterbury.
Working closely with the developer from the early planning stages, our involvement extended beyond the architectural design of the individual residence. Complete Projects assisted in helping establish the wider project team and supported the early subdivision and resource consent processes, helping bring together the planning, surveying, civil engineering, and consultant coordination required to initiate the overall development.
The vision for the development was to create a collection of homes inspired by traditional railway cottage architecture while incorporating modern construction methods, practical layouts, and efficient living spaces suited to the Canterbury residential market. Queen Cottage was developed as the first home within the wider subdivision and sets the architectural tone for the future stages of the development, with an additional seven homes planned in a similar style.
The design carefully balances traditional character with modern functionality. Features such as weatherboard cladding, covered verandas, pitched roof forms, decorative detailing, and cottage-inspired proportions reference classic railway cottage aesthetics, while contemporary structural systems, including a modern raft slab foundation, provide durability, performance, and construction efficiency.
A key consideration throughout the design process was maintaining and integrating the existing specimen trees across the site. Careful site planning, orientation studies, and landscaping integration were undertaken to help preserve the established character of the property while creating attractive separation and privacy between future dwellings.
Complete Projects guided the project from concept design through to building consent documentation, coordinating structural and geotechnical consultants and assisting the wider planning and civil engineering team with information required to support subdivision and land-use consent applications.
Timing and coordination between the residential designs and subdivision approval process were critical to allow the developer to begin early-stage marketing and sales activity. The final design was developed to create a visually attractive and market-ready product that could be effectively promoted prior to construction completion.
This project demonstrates Complete Projects’ ability to support residential developers beyond standalone architectural services – acting as a trusted advisor through the early planning, consultant coordination, and delivery phases required to turn development concepts into commercially viable outcomes.
