Takahanga Sport and Recreation Hub
Complete Projects provided full architectural design and construction support services for the Takahanga Sport & Recreation Hub, a major new community facility developed at Takahanga Domain in Kaikōura following the loss of the original sports clubrooms during the 2016 Kaikōura earthquake.
The project presented an important opportunity to create a modern, resilient, and highly functional facility capable of supporting the long-term needs of Kaikōura’s sporting groups, community organisations, and wider public. Working closely with stakeholders throughout the project, Complete Projects guided the development from early concept design through to building consent and construction support, coordinating the wider consultant team and helping deliver a facility tailored to the unique needs of the community.
The design balances practical sporting functionality with flexible community use, creating spaces that support both everyday club activities and larger community events. Key features include modern changing and clubroom facilities, improved spectator viewing areas, expansive outdoor deck spaces overlooking the sports fields, and a large multi-purpose function space designed to host events, gatherings, and community functions.
A strong focus was placed on creating a building that connects with its surroundings and celebrates the unique Kaikōura environment. Large glazed areas and carefully positioned communal spaces maximise views toward both the coastline and surrounding mountain ranges, helping establish the facility as both a practical sports hub and a welcoming community destination.
Complete Projects coordinated the full design process, including structural engineering, fire engineering, and HVAC integration, while also assisting contractors and stakeholders with planning, construction coordination, and consent requirements throughout delivery.
The completed facility now provides Kaikōura with a modern and resilient community asset that supports recreation, connection, and long-term community growth – creating a space that can be enjoyed by sporting groups, spectators, local organisations, and the wider public for years to come.
This project reflects Complete Projects’ collaborative and practical approach to community-focused design, combining stakeholder engagement, technical coordination, and thoughtful planning to deliver high-quality public facilities with long-term value.
