Thomson Holiday Home

Inland Road, Kaikōura

Complete Projects provided full architectural design services for the Thomson Holiday Home, a unique rural-inspired retreat located on Inland Road in Kaikōura.

Designed as a place for gathering, entertaining, and accommodating extended family and friends, the project takes inspiration from traditional rural shearers’ quarters and farm accommodation – reinterpreting these practical building forms into a modern holiday home environment tailored to the clients’ lifestyle and the surrounding rural landscape.

From the outset, the brief focused on creating a highly functional and social space rather than a conventional residential layout. The design incorporates communal-style living areas, shared bunkroom accommodation, practical service spaces, and covered external circulation areas that encourage connection, flexibility, and relaxed holiday living.

The architectural response embraces a simple rural aesthetic through the use of gable forms, corrugated cladding, oversized barn-style sliding doors, and covered outdoor spaces, while carefully integrating modern comfort and functionality throughout the home. The layout was also specifically designed to accommodate the practical requirements of the property, including generous storage and covered access for boats, farm equipment, and outdoor gear commonly associated with the Kaikōura lifestyle.

Complete Projects worked closely with the clients throughout the full design process, from concept development through to building consent documentation, coordinating consultant inputs and refining the planning and orientation to suit both the site conditions and the way the property would be used over time.

A key feature of the design is the balance between simplicity and practicality – creating robust, low-maintenance spaces that still feel warm, welcoming, and highly functional for large groups and family gatherings. Covered external thoroughfares and outdoor living areas strengthen the connection between the interior spaces and the surrounding rural environment, while also providing shelter and usability throughout the seasons.

The completed design reflects the clients’ personality, lifestyle, and long-term vision for the property, resulting in a distinctive holiday home that feels both contemporary and deeply connected to traditional rural architecture.
